Super light browser: K-Meleon

I was looking for a very light browser on last weekend to run some experiments. Light meaning it will not hog the system memory, so FireFox (3.xx.xx and 4) and Chrome are out of the picture since they suck up system memory. I tried Safari, but it uses the system CPU power too much, and my system is not so updated [ring a bell? ;) ], after a while, the whole system slow down because of Safari. My rockmelt and other browsers just cannot meet the requirement and I hate IE......
So time for google......

K-Meleon show up in top 10 search from google. And since it got portable version (no installation!), I quickly download it and give it a try.

From the developer:
"K-Meleon is an extremely fast, customizable, lightweight web browser based on the Gecko layout engine developed by Mozilla which is also used by Firefox. K-Meleon is Free, Open Source software released under the GNU General Public License and is designed specifically for Microsoft Windows (Win32) operating systems. "

Okay, K-Meleon is like brother/sister of FireFox, but after some testings and serious reloading, the memory never go more than 300M. And my system did not slow down. NICE!

K-Meleon support tab browsing and also come with mouse gesture which we have to install addon for FireFox to enable that. It can also enable reloading on specific tab for a period of time [that is the main reason I was looking for this kind of browser]. To do that:
Open the webpage -> View -> Reloading -> Continuous Reload...
A windows will pop up asking for how long it wait to reload in seconds. Put 120 for 2 mins or 180 for 3 mins, do not put too short like 60 seconds.

The only drawback of K-Meleon is the update is very slow (3 update only on 2010), which can be an advantage because less update needed. :)
Another drawback (depends on individuals) is the interface looks very outdated, unlike FireFox 4, IE10, Safari, and Opera which have most updated looks.

Here is the link to K-Meleon:

How to erase CDR effectively!

How do you get rid of CDR? Burning them will be very polluting, coz the plastic. Crush them? But how do you sure all the data has been erase? Here is a solution:

It uses high voltage arc to get rid of the metal layer that contains the date. Okay, not everyone have access to high voltage, this post just wasted your time and money. :P

Aluminium powered RC car

No, it is not electric power or battery power. It is Aluminium. See the video after the jump:

With some sort of chemical reaction, aluminium (soda can) can produce the power to run the RC car for ~40mins, up to 20mph. But not sure there is any harmful chemical waste produced with this process or not.

3D for iPad!

okay, this is not the convention 3D that we usually see by tricking our brain to believe that the picture is 3D. This might be the future for 3D, in this method, your device need to have camera. So that the apps will track your face and change the images based on your face location, so that you see some sort of 3D effect on the device. See the demo after the jump:

This is created by Laboratory of Informatics of Grenoble, EHCI Research Group.

I have a question though, what will happen if more than 1 person is looking at the iPad? What if I got a group of 5 persons and they are moving at different direction?? :P

Out of idea to tweet?

You see, sometime we have limitation, some of the day we are really out of idea on what to write on blog. I have a few of that moment. Here, and here. So what do you do if you out of idea of tweeting?

Fear not, if you really out of idea on what to tweet, use this page:
http://yes.thatcan.be/my/next/tweet/

You just need to put in your tweeter name and the page will read all your tweets and randomly mix around your previous tweet to create a new tweet. What I got most of the time is junk! hahah, but what would be enough for your next tweet!
Example I got:
1. Outdated Penang Uncle: take a rest Donkey parallel parking, ADV: WHATBerry! What is Maxthon?
2. Check out Windows 7? Outdated Penang Uncle: The real meaning Uncle: Angry Birds for iPhone - The art of.
3. Outdated Penang Uncle: More on scam Facebook wants to party? BOLEH: only in Windows 7 Keyboard shortcut!

You see what I mean? :)

Btw, we call it 'rojak' in Malaysia and Singapore for mixing up stuffs.

Windows Phone 7 mango update

Microsoft have start to giving WP7 update to WP7, this update is called mango. I wonder why they want to use fruit name. Android is using cookie names. Well, at least WP7 is more healthier. :P Anyway, here is a video from Engadget captured at the annual MIX developers' conference, after the jump.

It is a very long video (~21mins), but looks like this is very exciting to have the update and iPhone is pretty lame compare to WP7!

The demo of HTML5 inside this video triggered me to write blogpost regarding web browsers that supports/not-supports HTML5. I have done the testing and snapshot, just the matter of putting them into blogger, please stay tune. :)

Don’t open Word attachments in Reading Layout

As my blog title already told you, Outdated Penang Uncle! So I only found out recently how to disable to view in Reading Layout when open Word attachments from emails.

I think most of the people hate Reading Layout of MS Word. Not sure why they would make it a default when open Word attachments from email such as Outlook. So I google it and found out this:

Btw, this is not Outlook fault! That is a Word option.

To change the default to always open the message in the Print Layout:

Word 2003
Open Word-> Tools-> Options-> General-> Un-check "Allow starting in Reading Layout"

Word 2007
Open Word-> Office Logo-> Word Options…-> Popular-> Un-check "Open e-mail attachments in Full Screen Reading view"
