BlackBerry Z10 Teardown

BlackBerry Z10 is the flagship device that BlackBerry hope to get gain back some SmartPhone market which it is losing quickly to Samsung and Apple. Will it able to do it? Time will tell. Before this, lets look at what is inside of BlackBerry Z10. iFixIt gave 8/10 for Z10 of repairability, which is quite good, meaning it is easy to be fix.

Here we go:

As usual the link to iFixIt website as below:
BlackBerry Z10 Teardown

Actually I was convinced that this Z10 could be my next device after seeing this video:
http://outdatedpenanguncle.blogspot.com/2013/01/blackberry-z10-hands-on.html
Too bad, it is still very expensive (to me). BlackBerry need to improve on the apps as well.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 Teardown

Even though Samsung have just announced Samsung Galaxy S 4 couple hours ago, a Chinese website managed to get hold of SGS4 (should be sample or engineering unit) and give it a teardown. The info they have on each IC is not as good as iFixIt, but still good to look inside of this SGS4 right?

Ready or not, here we go:
[in square bracket is confirmed data or something that I wanted to say]

1. Teardown of SGS4 [ta~da~!]

2. Some crack on the plastic back on this engineering unit of SGS4.

3. Dual SIM, and microSD slot. This unit is a 16GB version.

To prevent this post hogging the main page, click "read more" to check the rest of the teardown.

4. Battery is made by Samsung's SDI company. 3.8V/9.88Wh. Speculated 2600mAh. [Confirmed]

5. Same like previous generations of Galaxy, no tricky parts, uses normal screws. [nice!]

6. Zoom in to the screws of SGS4. (say cheese guys :P)

7. SGS4's bottom module. Including vibrator and speakers.

8. SGS4's vibrator.

9. SGS4's interior design. [huh?]

10. MicroUSB connector. Supports OTG, reinforced with alloy, can be use as heat sink for the connector.

11. SGS4's main IC's are on top half of main board. This main board is screwed on the front casing.

12. Inside of SGS4.

13. SGS4's ear phone socket zoom in. [say cheese!]

14. Front facing camera with GT-i9500 code (small pix). Front camera, light detector, proxi sensor, and speaker.

15. Main board, connected with bendable PCB to the front board.

16. Heat sink (small pix) which designed to cool down the CPU.

17. Now let's look at the ICs. First up, Synaptics touch controller, hidden on the front board.

18. The 13MegaPixel of SGS4. Added a shield that makes it look huge.

19. Independent image processors to process the images from the 13MegaPixel camera.

20. Similar to dual SIM version of Note2, SIM slot hook up through soft PCB.

21. Under the shield, the real look of SGS4 main board.

22. TriQuint chips, quad-band signal amplifier.

23. SPY NA794 is being used with the TriQuint on picture no.22.

24. Intel PMB5745 is baseband chip.

25. SKY77615-11 is power amplifier.

26. Unknown. [duh]

27. Sammi's own pmic driver chip.

28. Back of SGS4 main board.

29. Samsung Exynos 5410 8core CPU. Packed with 2GB RAM.

30. Samsung's 16GB on-board memory.

31. Another Intel Chip? [The chinese website said it is iintel chip, but everyone can recognize the intel logo, duh]

32. ATMEL chip.

33. Qualcomm GSM baseband chip.

34. winbond cache memory chip.

35. Boardcom GPS chip.

36. That's all!

They Know What You Watching

We might have watched some crappy youtube video which was recommended by a friend, or a youtube link on Facebook, or recommended by youtube, or just a random video showed by youtube. We might have thought that no body would know about it.

WRONG!

As long as you are login to google account on any of the browser and whatever youtube video that you watched is being recorded in the history of your youtube account.

What's wrong with it? No body going to check the history, you might thought.

WRONG!

What if you borrow your computer or laptop to your family or friends or your children?
What if your friend need to use your Android or iPhone or WP or BB or whatever to check their emails or twitter or something else.
By chance they might have open up an youtube video that their friends shared with them and then they click on your youtube history.

Anyway, I might have sound too paranoid, most of the people watched what most of the people watch on youtube. So life goes on. Or is it?

Your choice after all.

Last week one of my external harddisk crashed, all the youtube video that I downloaded for my kids are gone. I have tried recuva and testdisk, I even run testdisk on Linux (boot from USB), too bad unable to fix it. I managed to recover some of them using photorec, but problem with photorec is it does not copy the files into the same file name, they are just some numbers, which was very frustrated.

So I go back to youtube history, look for the videos that I watched, and download again the videos that my kids like to watch, include PSY Oppa Gangnam Style. They still like it, what can you do?

To check your youtube history:
  1. Open the youtube if you haven't open it
  2. Click on your username, on top right side. A list of boxes show up, such as favorites, Watch Later, Likes, History, and your channels.
  3. Click on History and you can find all videos that you watched and you might find some of them that you think you never watch, but you did. HAHAHA.
  4. There is an option to delete all of the history or pick some of them and remove them.

Summary, it is very easy to find out what you have watched on youtube. Unless you always use Incognito on Chrome or InPrivate on IE8, or some other private mode on other browsers which is very unlikely.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 first TV ads

Samsung is showing this first TV ads about Samsung Galaxy S 4. However there was too many rumors on the spec, including Antutu result on the S4. In recent years, manufacturers are releasing too fast on new models, and bad supported on existing models. It might be the time for me to start root and flash my S2 with better custom ROM.

Microsoft Surface Pro Teardown

Microsoft Surface Pro is another tablet made for Microsoft. Compare to the Surface which was based on ARM cpu, this Pro is based on Intel cpu. Intel version of Surface has all the working Windows 8 apps compare to the limited apps the runs on ARM cpu Surface.

Let's see what is inside of a Microsoft Surface Pro:

As usually, here is the link to read it on iFixIt website:

Microsoft Surface Pro Teardown

Could it able to take back some market share that has been eaten up by iOS and Android tablet? Time will tell.

FireFox OS on Sony Xperia E

Watch the demo video of FireFox OS on Sony Xperia E. Why on a slower Xperia you might ask? Because FireFox OS supposedly targeting lower end smartphone. So lets hope that FireFox OS developers would at least release ROM for most of the lower end smartphone phone, including Samsung Galaxy W which my wife is using nowadays. This SGW is getting slower with the stock gingerbread ROM and stock Touchwiz. :(

[free] Lightning Launcher

Ever since I got my own SGS2, I have been using the stock ROM and stock launcher. Even though it is ICS, however the stock TouchWiz made by Samsung become super boring after few weeks of usage.

Therefore I started to look for different type of launchers. If you are fans of launchers, you should be familiar with apex launcher, nova launcher, and ADW launchers. By chance, I came across Light Launcher.

With less than 200kB, this should be the lightest launcher.

What I like about Lightning Launcher:
  • simple
  • very smooth
  • very fast
  • very light
  • very customizable
  • support gesture for some actions
  • can backup settings
  • FREE!
What I think Lightning Launcher could be better:
  • no support for icon packs just like apex/nova/adw [gonna missed out a lot of fun!]
  • too customizable that I was lost [I am Penang Uncle, okay?]
  • home and apps drawer share the same wallpapers [can't have one for each]

Get Lighting Launcher at Google Play

Update: If you want see some demo, here is a youtube video:
